For the September 4, 2026 Forbidden Rites event, the practical question is not which PoE 2 build has the highest paper damage. It is which character can move through the campaign, handle early maps, and still offer a sensible upgrade path when gear is limited. Gemling Legionnaire answers that problem unusually well, especially if you plan your equipment purchases around Path of Exile 2 Currency without locking yourself into one expensive setup too early.

Why Gemling Legionnaire Is a Strong Event Foundation

Gemling Legionnaire earns its place through skill-gem scaling rather than one narrow playstyle. Quality can meaningfully improve several skills, so the ascendancy remains useful while your character moves from leveling tools to a more specialized endgame plan.

That flexibility matters in a fresh event. You may begin with Grenades because they work with ordinary campaign equipment, then move toward Arc Spell Totems once your passive tree, mana pool, and level are ready. If your gear develops in another direction, Flameblast Oil Grenade and Twister remain possible destinations.

◆ Grenade Gemling is the smoothest route through the campaign and early maps.

◆ Arc Spell Totem Gemling offers comfortable range and low input during sustained clearing.

◆ Flameblast Oil Grenade provides strong ailment damage without requiring a highly specialized item set.

◆ Twister has the highest long-term ceiling but asks for the most planning and investment.

Level With Grenades, Then Prepare the Totem Transition

Arc Spell Totems should not be forced from the opening levels. The setup needs Ancestral Bond and several passive points before it functions properly, so trying to assemble it too early usually makes the campaign slower.

Explosive Grenade, Flash Grenade, Gas Grenade, Oil Grenade, and Cluster Grenade provide a practical leveling kit. Explosive Grenade lets you place danger ahead of your path, while Flash Grenade adds control and the other skills help layer area coverage.

Keep the crossbow and rings current. Added damage on these items is a major part of grenade performance, and outdated gear can make a correct passive setup feel weak. Boots should prioritize movement speed, while armour pieces need life and elemental resistances alongside useful armour or armour-evasion values.

Around level 65 to 70, reassess the character rather than switching by habit. If your mana pool, passive points, and equipment are ready, Arc Spell Totems becomes a natural next step.

What Makes Arc Spell Totems Worth the Delay

Arc Spell Totems is attractive because it handles much of the battlefield while you reposition. Arc benefits from retaining more chains, and Spell Totem gains valuable cast speed when several totems are active. Together, these effects create steady coverage instead of relying on one long stationary cast.

Level 23 Spell Totem is a useful progression target because it supports the desired totem limit while keeping mana costs more manageable than simply pushing the gem as high as possible. More levels can improve durability, but the practical breakpoint matters first.

The main cost is resource pressure. A large mana pool is part of the defensive plan, not merely a convenience. Kurgal's Gaze also becomes important for a sturdier late-game version, so do not treat the finished setup as a low-cost option from the moment you respec.

Choosing Between the Other Gemling Paths

Flameblast Oil Grenade suits players who enjoy deliberate timing and persistent Burning Ground effects. Its skill mechanics carry much of the early damage, but it asks for more positioning than a totem setup.

Twister is better viewed as a destination than a starting instruction. Its interaction with global gem quality, projectile behavior, Frenzy Charge generation, mobility, and wide clearing can produce an impressive ceiling, yet the required equipment package makes it less reliable for a fresh character.

◆ Choose Grenades if you want self-sufficient progression with naturally acquired equipment.

◆ Choose Arc Totems if range, relaxed clearing, and a clear endgame plan matter most.

◆ Choose Flameblast if you prefer powerful ailment windows over constant movement.

The Sensible 0.5.5 Plan

Start as Grenade Gemling, keep life and resistances current, and upgrade your crossbow whenever its damage falls behind. Move to Arc Spell Totems only when the passive tree and mana support are in place. Save Twister for a well-funded later project, and use cheap Path of Exile 2 Orbs carefully rather than spending before your build direction is settled. That approach gives most players a faster campaign, a safer early Atlas, and room to adapt as the event develops.
